REGALWISE SHEPHERDS
PUPPY TRAINING
These 5 week old pups are biting my arms,
legs, hands and clothes. The little barracudas hurt!
Biting is a puppy's main form of play with his
littermates, and it takes some training to teach them alternate forms of play
with people. I generally close my hand around the upper or lower jaw while the
pup has my hand in his mouth, and squeeze for 20 or 30 seconds (or for at least
10 seconds longer after the pup tries to get away).

The puppy will do one of 3 things:
1. He will go away. That's good, just ignore him
for a while.
2. he will lick you. That's good, it shows
respect.
3. He will bite again. In this case, you need to
squeeze longer and harder, until the pup is trying really hard to get away.
It will take several times a day for a few days
for him to unlearn the biting behavior. Have everyone who is able in the
household do it too. Do not apologize or make up to him afterwards. You are
trying to get across the message that you disapprove of his biting and refuse to
play with him when he does it. Some people have good results yelling
"OUCH!" and then ignore the pup for a while.
