NAIL
TRIMMING
To trim the nails on a big puppy or adult dog, the best way I have found is to sit on the floor with your legs outstreched before you. Then get the pup or dog laying on their back between your legs. Start with their head toward you and tail down by your feet. Close your legs against their body to hold them with their feet up in the air and keep them from rolling or squirming. Then you can trim the toenails on the front feet. Then turn the dog around so their head is facing away and their tail is facing you. Again hold them tight with your legs as you trim their back feet. If the dog is struggling a lot, you might have to fold your legs over the top of the dog to hold them down. If the dog objects to laying on their back, you might just do that much every day for a few days, rewarding them for staying still for a few minutes. After a few days they begin to accept laying that way, then you can do their nails. It helps if you stay very calm and firm. |
